Guidance Counselor (ret.) Diane Malcom stated, “The Abdelkader Contests are wonderful additions to our list of scholarships … especially for those students who like history, civics, and possess higher order thinking/writing skills. Each student can take different cultural, historical, and educational perspectives from what they learned and applied this knowledge to their world as a young adult in pursuing the next step of their education.”

From Missouri to Moscow to Mecca, Emir Abdelkader was an Arab Muslim hero admired by world leaders such as President Lincoln, Queen Victoria, and Pope Pius IX. His powerful example of Islamic leadership in compassion and highest moral values counters stereotypes and inspires cultural literacy, civility, tolerance, and understanding. An Iowa settlement was named “Elkader”; he saved thousands of Christians in Damascus; and upon his death in 1883, The New York Times eulogized, “…he was one of the few great men of the century.”

Today, Emir Abdelkader is remembered as an esteemed humanitarian, ethical leader, statesman, and religious scholar who won the hearts and minds of people he met. His relevance for our global society transcends culture and faith traditions.

“What the Abdelkader Education Project offers is much more than an essay prize. It offers students a chance to engage with a narrative of history not often discussed in Western classrooms, and one that is crucial to develop a comprehension of the many variegated ways that the “West” intersects with the “East” and vice-versa. Especially today – in a time where mistrust, ignorance, and violence abounds – Emir Abdelkader’s legacy provides a useful model for how global relationships might be rethought and restructured to better suit us all.” - Brandon Jennings, college essay winner, Iowa City, Iowa

The 501c3 non-profit Abdelkader Education Project (AEP) has sponsored the Abdelkader Global Leadership Prize since 2009.
