IDPH

As the school year starts to approach, here is a helpful tool for knowing which screenings that your child may need prior to entry of their upcoming school year at Central. There are four categories of health screenings regulated by the state in Iowa: Dental, Vision, Immunization & Blood Lead. These requirements are set by the Iowa Department of Public Health to ensure students are healthy and ready to learn.

( Note: Immunization information on these requirements can be found on our website including any required booster series (KG, 7th & 12th), as well as exemption information.)

*When preparing for these requirements, please keep the following in mind:

-The school nurse completes vision screenings in Preschool and 2nd grade for the following year's requirements (KG & 3rd). If your child completed these screenings with the school, no additional screening is required for the state; however, it is still recommended for your child to have a professional screening upon your vision provider, your health care provider's and your discretion.

-The school nurse also assists in completing dental screenings in Preschool to meet the following KG year requirement. If your child completed this screening with the school, no additional screening is required for this either. It is still recommended that your student see a dental office every six months.

-Lastly, blood lead levels are usually completed by your healthcare provider before 18 months old at their well-child checks for the Kindergarten requirement. Proof of this screening prior to age 6 is required or a state-approved exemption must be on file.

If your student(s) need any of these requirements (including immunizations/proof of exemption for their upcoming school year), you will have received and/or will be receiving reminders via email or mail from your school nurse, including required certifications. Please reach out with any questions or concerns via email: mbergan@central.k12.ia.us.

See you all next school year!
