The past few years we have put a heavy emphasis on building stronger relationships at Central. Our next step in doing so is to tell you a little about ourselves! Each week you will see posts highlighting a team member. Feel free to comment to tell us what we have in common! Please give a big hello to Mr. Bergan!

Today marks the first day of National Nutrition Month. This is a month-long campaign designed to help us focus on making educated and more informed choices to better develop healthier eating habits, while getting out and being more active each day. The theme for this year is “Fuel for the Future.” The idea is to make food selections with sustainability in mind, giving our bodies the nourishment needed throughout the day to keep us going for the long haul. A BIG THANK YOU to the four ladies that help make Central’s lunchroom one of the loudest and most happy areas in the school! With smiles on their faces, they not only feed hundreds of hungry kids daily, but they are also helping our students receive balanced meals to keep them fueled for the school day.

Thank you again to Brown's Sales & Leasing in Elkader for supporting our student-of-the-month program. These programs allow us to recognize one Student-Athlete and one Fine Arts student for individual character and habits that lead to success. Thank you to Beth Rentschler, Director of High School Partnerships for joining our assembly today. The February Fine Arts Student of the Month is known for being reliable and always willing to do what is asked. This young person is described as a go-getter at all times and someone who wants to help those around her. They bring a positive attitude, are very willing to ask for help when needed. Being respectful to other is a quality you can expect, and they always represent Central well when traveling to events at other schools. The February Fine Arts Student of the Month is Staci Herman.

These programs allow us to recognize one Student-Athlete and one Fine Arts student for individual character and habits that lead to success. Thank you to Beth Rentschler, Director of High School Partnerships for joining our assembly today. The February Student-Athlete of the Month is described as a team first player that cares more about team success than their own acknowledgements. They consistently put in time beyond what is required, like attending open gyms, to put in time to better themselves as a player. In practice they lead by example and were often the first done with spring, a result of pushing themselves to be the best each time. Regardless of what drill was being done, this student-athlete was known for always doing it the right way whether coaches were watching or not. In Strength & Conditioning class, the student is always on task and never needs to be redirected. The coaches went on to say, “Many things make someone a good teammate, one of the biggest is sacrifice. What you are willing to sacrifice to help your team - at open gym, at youth tournaments, giving up playing time, or even your own body when taking a charge or diving for a loose ball - this young person has never shied away or complained about making sacrifices for the betterment of the team.” Finally, on top of the athletic leadership this student is also an active member of our Band and FFA. The February Student-Athlete of the Month is Korey Schantz.

This student is dedicated to the commitments they have made and works very hard to improve, which includes strong listening skills when teachers and coaches are speaking. #ClaytonCountyBEST students, Dani Whittle and Allison White, have partnered with the George Maier Rural Heritage Center to create a museum display about dairy farming in Clayton County. Dani Whittle met with her grandpa, Tom Whittle and Heritage Center representative, Roger Thomas this week to look at what the museum has. If you have old dairy equipment, manuals or photos of milking barns you would like a new home for or would be willing to loan please contact 23whid@central.k12.ia.us or call the school. We are looking for Shotgun Buckets (see picture below) in particular. The Rural Heritage Museum has a large collection of artifacts from the Clayton County area including agricultural and household items located in the old sale barn near the Elkader City Park.

Public Schools Weeks is February 27 – March 3, 2023. This is a week set aside to celebrate public schools and the administrators, teachers, parents and the school board members who work diligently for our students. This is an excellent time to reach out to your community, local businesses and lawmakers to discuss the continued importance of public education. Research shows that communities and parents that are actively engaged and supportive of their local public schools and educators, add tremendous strength in the overall success and education of their students in an ever-changing and diverse world. From parents, to teachers, to community leaders, providing a safe, healthy, learning environment is a large group effort and the saying “It takes a village” couldn’t be a better description. We are incredibly proud of the village we have here at Central. We invite you to get involved in celebrating Central Community and the educators that are committed to serving our kids! Please share below something positive you feel that Central is doing to help make a difference in the lives of your families! Whether it be a photo you’ve captured, something a teacher has done, or whatever it may be that has made an impact on your son or daughter, please help us showcase all the great things happening here at Central! #PSW23
