Every year, two 5th grade students are chosen by school staff for the Merit Award. This is an award for students who exhibit outstanding qualities in and out of the classroom and is not based on academic performance. This year's winners are Cade Zittergruen and Samuel Belser. Among the many comments made by staff about these two young men, here are a few quotes to describe Cade and Samuel, and why they deserve this award: Samuel exemplifies great character to his fellow classmates and to all staff as well. His kind heart and contagious smile are infectious to everyone he comes in contact with. He always makes sure to include everyone, making sure no one feels excluded both in and out of the classroom. Samuel is someone who embodies what it means to treat every person you meet with dignity and respect. He doesn't tear people down, but rather lifts them up. He is the type of student that every kid in the class wants to work with during partner activities. Cade's fun and can do attitude have never gone unnoticed. He gives each new challenge with a smile and shows the willingness to try with a positive attitude. Cade has always been a kind friend to his peers and has always been very respectful to teachers. He is someone who gives his best effort whether it's a math problem, a story he is writing, or a game at recess. I always enjoy watching Cade at recess throwing a ball around with his buddies, genuinely having fun. Please help us congratulate Cade and Samuel!

Iowa's Secretary of State Paul Pate presented Mr. Wiley with the Carrie Chapman Cat Award. This award is given to high schools who have 90% or more of eligible voters register to vote. Mr. Wiley, our American Government teacher, has made this happen two years in a row!! This year, only 17 high schools (out of approximately 350) in Iowa received this award! Congrats Mr. Wiley and all students involved!
