The past few years we have put a heavy emphasis on building stronger relationships at Central. Our next step in doing so is to tell you a little about ourselves! Each week you will see posts highlighting a team member. Feel free to comment to tell us what we have in common! Please give a big hello to Mr. Zurbriggen!

We all know how important starting our day off with a healthy breakfast can be. National School Breakfast Week starts today and focuses on the value of nutritious school breakfasts fueling our students for a day of success. This year's theme for #NSBW23 is "Dig Into School Breakfast" and we hope to catch some of our Central students digging into some of their favorite breakfast options this week! Stay tuned...

National School Social Work Week is held the first full week of March each year. This is a week to celebrate and show appreciation to our school social workers across the area. As parents, teachers, administrators and educators, we truly appreciate all the time and energy they give to our students helping them work to be their best, do their best and achieve academic success. School Social workers face each day, ready to help our students with any mental or behavioral challenges they may be facing, while providing academic and classroom support. They truly advocate for our children! THANK YOU School Social Workers!!!

The Fine Arts Department is looking for some items and hoping you can help. Does anyone have a cheese head we could borrow? You will get it back. We also need several pool noodles. These may be cut to different sizes, so this would be a donation. If you have any of these items, please contact director Carolyn Yanda at cyanda@central.k12.ia.us

Central Community NHS hosted a blood drive for the American Red Cross. Our goal was set to collect 60 units during today’s drive. We were fortunate to fill every appointment offered and ended up collecting 66 units of blood from our generous donors, including Central staff, students and local community members! Thank you to everyone that helped make it happen and BIG THANKS for the Gift of Life!

Today marks the first day of National Nutrition Month. This is a month-long campaign designed to help us focus on making educated and more informed choices to better develop healthier eating habits, while getting out and being more active each day. The theme for this year is “Fuel for the Future.” The idea is to make food selections with sustainability in mind, giving our bodies the nourishment needed throughout the day to keep us going for the long haul. A BIG THANK YOU to the four ladies that help make Central’s lunchroom one of the loudest and most happy areas in the school! With smiles on their faces, they not only feed hundreds of hungry kids daily, but they are also helping our students receive balanced meals to keep them fueled for the school day.

Thank you again to Brown's Sales & Leasing in Elkader for supporting our student-of-the-month program. These programs allow us to recognize one Student-Athlete and one Fine Arts student for individual character and habits that lead to success. Thank you to Beth Rentschler, Director of High School Partnerships for joining our assembly today. The February Fine Arts Student of the Month is known for being reliable and always willing to do what is asked. This young person is described as a go-getter at all times and someone who wants to help those around her. They bring a positive attitude, are very willing to ask for help when needed. Being respectful to other is a quality you can expect, and they always represent Central well when traveling to events at other schools. The February Fine Arts Student of the Month is Staci Herman.

The February Student-Athlete of the Month is described as a team first player that cares more about team success than their own acknowledgements. They consistently put in time beyond what is required, like attending open gyms, to put in time to better themselves as a player. In practice they lead by example and were often the first done with spring, a result of pushing themselves to be the best each time. Regardless of what drill was being done, this student-athlete was known for always doing it the right way whether coaches were watching or not. In Strength & Conditioning class, the student is always on task and never needs to be redirected. The coaches went on to say, “Many things make someone a good teammate, one of the biggest is sacrifice. What you are willing to sacrifice to help your team - at open gym, at youth tournaments, giving up playing time, or even your own body when taking a charge or diving for a loose ball - this young person has never shied away or complained about making sacrifices for the betterment of the team.” Finally, on top of the athletic leadership this student is also an active member of our Band and FFA. The February Student-Athlete of the Month is Korey Schantz.
