Central Community School Receives STEM BEST® H.D. Program Award
Elkader, Iowa – The Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council announced Central Community School as one of the 38 school districts receiving the STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) H.D. Program models for 2021. The STEM BEST H.D. Program is designed to prepare students for the workforce through curriculum focused on skills needed in job sectors such as computer science/information technology, healthcare professions and advanced manufacturing.
The STEM BEST H.D Program is the result of a special appropriation from the Iowa legislature to expand the STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) Program to focus efforts on job sectors that are in high demand. It will help build partnerships between schools and businesses, allowing educators and industry professionals to work together to develop curriculum and projects that prepare students for careers in these high-demand fields.
This $40,000 expansion of Central’s Clayton County BEST program will target grades 7-12 in the areas of advanced manufacturing. Our current program partners Central students and business owners with a general focus on solving real problems in the areas of technology, marketing, and general problem-solving. According to the census, manufacturing is the largest employer sector in Clayton County with 19.2% of the population. Central, with support from NICC, recently purchased a Torchmate plasma table to expand and diversify our current offerings to attract more students and partners to our program. In addition, expanding our offerings to include advanced manufacturing will add Central’s industrial technology teacher, Ryan Bergan, to our Clayton County BEST program, strengthening the student experience and ensuring program longevity. We will also be providing additional opportunities for students in grades 7-8 and feel that the connection between Clayton County BEST and our industrial technology program will expand the participation and build stronger employability skills of all students in our work-based programs.
