Mr. O'brien's class toured a swine facility this morning and brought back lots of interesting information. Bio security is very important. All air for the building is brought in through filters that can screen out bacteria and viruses. The filters for the 2500 sow facility cost $250,000 but should last 2-3 years. The unit does shower in shower out whenever you enter or leave. Travis Hanaway, the manager said he has taken as many as 12 showers per day. To seal the buildings and make them air tight the construction company used a semi load of caulk. They farrow 120 sows per week and the pigs are weaned at 18-21 days of age. The owners finish to market all the pigs produced. When you enter the buildings the fans blow out at you so no unfiltered outside air gets in. The unit employs 9 people when in full production. We would like to thank Travis and the owners for giving us the opportunity to see a modern swine farrowing facility.
