Fourth graders wrapped up Junior Achievement today by learning about the supply chain. Thanks to Ann McCorkindale for coming in to teach us about businesses!

Central had the pleasure of having three high school band members attend the Dorian Honor Band over the last couple of days. The kids are tired, but had a great time meeting new people and getting to perform at Luther College last night!

Testimonial Tuesday - From time to time, we receive feedback from people who have recently been provided great guidance and support or experienced something worth mentioning. Promoting positive experiences is something we feel should not only be focused on, but shared with all of you. Today's testimonial was shared with Central's Business Manager, following a new family moving into the district and starting school at Central.
If you have recently had an experience that you feel is worth noting, please email administration and share what positive impact has been made on your student and or family. We always enjoy hearing about these experiences!

Upcoming Warrior Events for the Week!
Looks like it's a great week for some downtime and to get outside and enjoy the weather today! Happy Monday!

Congratulations to all for a fabulous effort.

The Central Girls Basketball Team had their end of the season banquet last night. We recognized the success of the team as well as those players that were instrumental in the team’s success. Brooklyn Amsden won the 2023-2024 Free Throw Championship. Brooklyn went undefeated in rounds of 10 free throws against her teammates to win this award. This has become a tradition during winter break practices for the Girls Basketball Program. Congratulations Brooklyn!!!

National FFA Week rounds out with one of the favorite days of the year - Drive Your Tractor to School Day! Lucky for these kiddos, some of the young men and women driving today gave a little field trip to our K-2nd grade students.

Thank you to Cassie Winters, who brought in eggs to hatch in an incubator in Mr. Rodenberg's Class. It is a three week process. Pictured here are three, less than a day old. What a fun project!

This week has been overwhelmingly high with absences related to illness. We have seen the following diagnoses: Influenza A, Influenza B, Strep throat, stomach flu, Conjunctivitis (pink eye). Below are the statistics for the last few days related to illness.
How can everyone help?
Encourage hand washing; make sure your children are getting adequate rest, fluids and nutrition; teach your children to cover their coughs and sneezes and monitor closely for symptoms related to illness. If your child is displaying symptoms of illness, please keep them home.
Per our school policy, please keep your children home from school for 24 hours after any episode of vomiting, diarrhea or fever (100 F or higher). Your children can return once that symptom and fever has been resolved for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
Aside from meeting our school policy guidelines, your children should be able to participate comfortably and be close to their baseline. An extra day of rest after meeting guidelines is best if possible.
For more information about Influenza symptoms, visit: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm and for more information regarding exclusion criteria, visit: https://hhs.iowa.gov/media/2819/download?inline=
Thank you for your help in trying to keep our students healthy,
Sincerely,
Nurse Meghan

Over the last couple of weeks, Coach Downs has had a special guest helping out in his PE Classes. Chief Seitz (or better known as Officer Seitz) is a specially trained, certified Defensive Tactics Instructor. Everyone wants to feel safe, and they deserve to be safe. It’s human nature to underestimate ourselves on this topic and unfortunately, that usually results in avoidance. With the concepts and techniques learned in this class, students were shown they could recognize and are very capable of protecting themselves - regardless of what they thought they were capable of before. “You’re far more capable than you give yourself credit for and by the end of this, they outperformed what they thought they could do. That instills confidence and that’s what we want, self-empowerment.”
Officer Seitz says, “We exist to assist our public in their safety and I don’t think that should start and stop just when we’re there. I’m interested in protecting the most valuable asset a community has, OUR KIDS. We can and should educate the public we serve on how to identify situations and give them tools to more safely escape a situation before we (police) get there, I feel that’s critical and a great use of our time.”
Students in these classes were instructed to better recognize common contributing factors involved in potentially dangerous situations and then given tools to safely respond. This included helping de-escalate a building issue in a safe manner, as well as avoid active, ongoing potential risks. In the event those things are not possible, they received instruction on some simple, but effective physical techniques as their last option, giving them the ability to escape.
Officer Seitz followed up with, “Really it’s about mental preparation and mitigating mental and physical damage from a dangerous event and instilling confidence and assisting our community members in our shared interests in their safety, whether we’re there or not. If I could put one of our officers in each student’s pocket, I would, but we can’t. So, we need to help them until we get there.”

"80% of success is showing up!" - Attendance Works
Consistently attending school is important for a student's continued growth. In January the kindergarten class had a 97.32% attendance rate and the 7th graders had an attendance rate of 95.53%. They celebrated with a fun picture and bragging rights for the month! Keep up the great work. We are happy to have you here!

Congratulations to the Central Boys Basketball Team and to Isaac Loan and Jake Hertrampf on your UIC Nominations. Way to go Warriors!

The date for Central's 2024 Homecoming has been set!

National FFA Week brings all sorts of things, but today, we happened to have a cute, little farmer and her animals roaming the halls of Central.

The Iowa Army National Guard visited Central today to show how to launch a cannon. They talked about all the algebra and physics involved. What a fun way to educate!!!

We are seeing a growing number of drivers making U-turns in front of the school each day. For the safety of our students, we want to remind you when dropping off and/or picking up students, there should be no one making any U-turns on the street in front of the school. Please take the extra steps to help keep the safety of our kids a priority. We appreciate your help!
